A SIGN OF THE TIMES.
"On active service in British East Africa" is tho headline of a letter addressed to the Trades Hall, Wellington, by Mr D. A. Steytlor, Vlakplaals, South Africa. The communication reads: "Undoubtedly you will bo very surprised to recoivo a letter from mo—a Dutch-speaking South African. A friend also in uniform told me that through you (tho letter is addressed to the late Sergeant Carey) I will very likely be able to got a position on a station where sheep-farming is driven on a great scale. 1 havo been farming with my father on his farm for the last four yoars, but on account of many droughts which our country is subject to, and also through being in- j experienced in tho proper way of farming, it has not been quite a success yot. I am on active service in German East Africa, but the campaign being about finished, I hopo to bo homo in the Free State by New Year." Tho writer concluded by stating that ho will feel proud of himself for having an opportunity to learn something of farming in "the country that prospers so well."
