Herr yon "Weigand, writing in lie World, describes the appalling devastation and desolation which extends for miles behind tho German lino on the Somme. Lie says the Allies are not shelling tho towns more, than is necessary, yet Rove is partially iv ruins, Peronne is burning, and Baupaume is a picture of destruction. Hundreds of inhabitants refuse to leave their homes and are living in the cellars. There are many German bomb-proof shelters 30 feet underground, and the writer saw a subterranean hospital below the officers' quarters.

The 'Morning Post says that some of the prisoners taken during the fighting on the Somme front, include some naval men who participated in the Jutland fight. After the naval battle, they were hurried westwards as a naval brigade.
