The Department is making arrangements to accept the custody of war loan, certificates from those of the public who so desiro it.
Paragraph 8 of the war loan prospectus has now been amended. Interest will be paid from September 1 on all lodgments before that date in respect of prepaid instalments on amounts for bonds up to £20,000, provided the term is for 21 years. Yesterday, Mr E. Stapp, tho Postmaster, sent an officer of the Department lo interview all large employers of labour i.i*. the town asking them to assist and encourage, their employees in every way to invest in the loan. From observation, it i.s gathered that a particularly'good business is being done at tho local office in war loan certificates especially, the people in a small way financially subscribing liberally according to their ability.
TO-NIGHT'S MEETING. An opportunity to stir up interest iv the Joan is given by the public meeting called for to-night by the Mayor. The meeting will be held in the Drill Hall, commencing at 7.30 o'clock. In addition to the Mayor, Mr. J. McQueen, manager of the local branch of the Union Bank, Mr 11. Tolley (President Foilding Chamber of Commerce), and Mr J. H. Perrett (Sandon) will speak. . POINTERS FOR PATRIOTS.
AYe should all invest the whole of our available capital in the "small investors' " £10 war certificates at £8, because these being payable to bearer, are practically State bank notes.
Though they may not be re-issued by the banks, they are better than a bank note, inasmuch that even if carried in the pocket they increase in value by 7d per month.
There will be little or no hesitation by any financially sound trader jn accepting them at cost plus accrued interest, and quite possibly at a premium.
Th© certificate now costs £8. In one year it will be worth £8 7s In two years £8 14s Bd. In. threo years £9 2s 6d. In four years £9 10s Bd. in five years £10.
Exemption from income tax at the present rates makes it a 5i per cent, investment, and next year the rate of taxation will inevitably be higher. It is an exceedingly easy means of distributing one's capital by way of a gift, settlement, investment, or a testamentary disposal (possibly also without death duty).
ACCOUNTS OF MINORS. The Postmaster-General announces that minors' savings-bank accounts may be operated upon by the parent of the child, if tho amount withdrawn is paid out in war certificates.
