OlliMt MA'ITEUS
[I'EU riIKSS ASSOCIATION.] ■ *_ Jhmedin, August 17. The Hon. James Allen (suites that the iN'ew Zealand hospital ships Marama and Alaheno arc now doing splendid work conveying sick and wouncleu soldiers between l< ranee and England, their services being ot an lmpernu character. They arc not used exclusively for the conveyance of New Zealanuer.s. The extent of their work. may be gauged by the record ot the lUaheno, which on July 8 Jaet took no lower than 1141 sick and wounded from Havre —a record ■which, the Minister sa.vs, seems almost incredible. The Minister announces that the suppjy of small arms and ammunition is now good. There is a prospect oi an ample supply of artillery ammunition. The Lewis quick-firing guns are proving excellent 'weapons lor the training camps. The work of training our men has, in consequence, been exceptional, and they are far advanced. As regards money for the supply ol comforts for our sick and woumled at Home, both the High Commissioner and the London War Contingent Association have substantial .funds u> hand. The New Zealand Patriotic Societies have contributed generously.
