Feilding Star, Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette. SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1916. GETTING USED TO HUGHES.

Hughes! The name has become internationally famous. It catches the eye with prominent personages m America, Canada, and Australia. ExJudge Charles Hughes has just officially accepted the Republican Party's nomination for the American Presidency, the Democrats' nominee being Dr. Wilson. The election is in November next, and we think the coiner of the phrase "too proud to fight" will be sent back to school. Another famous Hughes is one whom the King was pleased to honour last year, General Sir Sam of that ilk, Canada's enthusiastic Minister of Defence, who intends shortly to see some actual warfare as a fighting unit. And last, but by no means le%st of the trio, is plain Bill Hughes, who renewed the youth of \old Englanders and made Imperialists of Little Englanders during his .recent visit to the Old Country, yet was not seduced by any title, place, or power that was offered to induce him to stay at Home. The Australian and the American are both members of Welsh families, whilst General Sam is of Scotch extraction.
