WORK OF FRENCH WOMEN.
MORE THAN AVERAGE MEN
Gunner Frank Ashton, before he enlisted, was a member of the Sydney Sun staff, and is now attached to the Anzac headquarters in France as a despatch-rider, extols, in a letter to friends, the excellent work the women, old men, and children oi France are doing. He says: "The countryside around our quarters looks fine. There is not an acre of available land that is not covered with green crops, a fact which speaks well for the women, old men. and children, ivho aro left to till tho soil. They are typical workers, especially tho women, some of whom I have noticed to do more than the average man. It is good to see them behind the plough. and I noticed some, too. while travelling from the south by train, engaged in engine-cleaning. One can thus sec that there are very few jobs that the women of France are not game and capable of tackling."
