"DRY" RACES.
NO ARGUMENT Oil DISOIIDEIi
Gilgandra, N.S.W., Jane 8. The Gilgaiudra Jockey Club's annual race meeting, wiiioU was conducted under teetotal conditions was com-menced-'yesterday.. The hrst day s racing was a huge success. ihere were large helds ami plenty of money about. This meeting will be closely watched by -racing clubs, as it has done away with, tlie publicans booth. Tho -attendance was targe, and included, more ladies than usual, lliis is attribute to th e absence ot a publican's booth oa tne ground. No more orderly day's racing than this was could have been witnessed anywhere. There were no men oa the grounds under the iuiiuaneo ot druik, and the police ioi-co had Utile or nothing to <io. No -arguments occurred between "drunks" and bookmakers over bets, j aaid the committee 'had an easy time j throughout. According to' the hotelkeepers numbers ot bottles and llasks were sold, but none wore seen about tho course. If this was the case they were evidently consumed away from public view. Tho club' 6 soft drink booth did a fair 'business considering the cool weather, and the hospital tea tent reported good business. At night in the town tilings were quite tho- reverse, as those who wero necessarily teetotal at tho races made up ior it then with a vengeance. There were a- number of drunken men about the streets, and tho police had a busy time ,a.nd a few men were locked up for disorderly conduct, today's races point to a greater success than the meeting of yesterday.
