Timaru, January 27. Guide J. N. Lippe,. on leaving his hut at the Hermitage for a couple of days, 9th to 11th January, left his purse, containing £23 and other valuables, in a pocket of a coat hanging up, and did not look at it till his second return on January 14. The purse had then gone. G. H. McLauchlan, engaged as a porter at the Hermitage, was charged to-day with the theft of the purse and contents, and pleaded guilty. He was arrested at Fairlie, and,'after denying, confessed the theft.
