FIRE.
SENSATION AT A WHARF
F.BB PBESS ASSOCIATION. . Auckland, January 27. At 7.30 o'clock an explosion of benzine occurred on the ketch Kereru. lying at King's wharf, which resulted in a. fire breaking out aboard. The vessel trades regularly to Niue Island, and at the time of the explosion had 3000 cases of benzine aboard loaded for Gisborn© and Napier and consigned to Cranby, and Co. Two Niue Islanders were very severely burned by the explosion, and were taken to the hospital. The fire spread rapidly, and in still burning fiercely, several minor explosions of benzine occurring. The Fire Brigade and firo float are pumping water into the ship with the object of sinking her. Auckland, January 28. The fire on the ketch Kereru is still burning, but is well in hand. The hull, nvhich was practically gutted, will be beached this afteVnoon. A large quantity of the oil cargo which was jettisoned is floating in the harbour, probably not much injured. It is impossible to estimate the damage yet.
