ITS MONTHLY MEETING

On the motion of the chairman, the following transfers on the rate roll were agreed to: 11. Crisp, Apiti, to John McKenzie, hotelkoeper, Apiti ; sections 21. 22, 23, 27, and 28. Resolved: That the Council strongly urgo the Department in letting the contracts for the mail services between lli-uwai and Ashhurst and Piripiri and Ashhurst to arrange for the service io commence from the country end instead of as at present from Ashhurst. and that n copy of this motion he sent to the Postmaster-General and also to the member for tho district..

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr I). Sinclair) reported for the month as Sol lows:-- - Mangaone Riding. The roads 'on the whole are in very gwnl condition, ordinary repairs have been attended to through the riding during tho month, the fine weather has heen very ■beneficial to the roads generally in the riding. This -will apply to the greater number of the roads throughout the county. Tho teams are busy carting river metal on to the mai» roads, and have readied up as far ak the Raumai. store, ft will take some time yet before thoy have the main road completed. The side of the road at Maimer's is being improved and drains cleared out near Raumai as labour can be spared for it. Other minor repairs have been done in various places.

Pohangina Riding.•■■• Roads all very fail. There are places, such as the top of the branch requires sonic attention. This will bo attended to shortly as the man can be spared to attend to it. At present the roadman has to cive a portion of his timo to the teams at Rauinai. Some metal has been broken on Cowen's hill. This will be pub on the road shortly, and other roads repaired where necessary.

TJmutoi Riding.—The most of tho roads are in very fair order, in tho central part thoy are in need of attention, through having no roadman for some time. Applications for the position of roadman for this and the Table Flat have been invited by advertisement, and those will he considered, and one appointed. The work of excavating tho pana at the lower end of the Piripiri hill has been completed. Tho work lias been rather heavy, hut a good job has now been made of it. and will be a good improvement to that uarf. The contractor for the additions to tho Piripiri bridge will have the work completed in about a week's time. .Arrangements are bei'iiu: made to go on with the filling as soon as the timber work is finished.
