THE SCHOOLS' FAIR.
Country schools particularly are reminded that all money for tho Queen contest in connection with the Allied Nations' Fair must be in on Friday night by 9 a.m. Those in charge of refreshments aud the sweets and flower stalls would like donors of these to leave them at the Drill Hall on Thursday or Friday morning, to to tell one of the teachers, when they will bo sent for. Pot plants or goods for any other stalls will be received or sent for at any time from now on.
There will be a matineo at tho Lyceum Theatre at 2.30, next Friday (Sale Day), not Thursday.
The Aliens Board has reported favourably on the ease of Professor yon Zedlitz, who will remain on the staff of Victoria College.
The reference in Saturday's issue to the closing of the children's essay competition by Mr McMenamin did not refer to the clock competition, which closes on the 20th mst.
An ex-New Zealander, avlio has offered his services to the War Office and received a captaincy in an Indian Cavalry Regiment, Avrites to 'a relative: "My First Lieutenant is Rajah Sahib or Something, with pots of money. He has three motor cars and a mojtor hike,"
The Hon. Ja§. Allen contemplates, in order to satisfy himself and the public mind, and especially the mothers of Auckland, the sending of a special officer from New Zealand to Egypt to enquire into the matter of reporting on casualties, also tho nondelivery of parcels, aaid to report to him direct upon tlie question.
Tho slips in tho 'Wliangamonioua(Taranaki) tunnel were cleared on Friday afternoon, after blocking the Line for a fortnight. The heavy work in clearing tho tunnel is Avell illustrated by the statement that 20 chains inside- the tunnel a huge rata was found embedded in the mud. The log was cut in four and a 40-ton engine hitched to one piece, bub could not move it. Eventually, by cutting tho rata again, the workers were enabled to remove the obstruction.
The committee of the '"Britannia and Her Daughters" company desires to thank the following for gfifts and loan of material for the late production : Messrs Hubner (for a very largo amount of labour and material), John Cobbe, Joseph Darragh, Bram\vell Bros., Ernest Short, Macedo, A. J. Hum, Aitken and Evans, and It. Newman; also to Mr Millar (electrical engineer, for valuable assistance), Messrs Jehb and Thompson (who at the eleventh hour most successfully installed electric light fittings for the stage), and to the Star for liberality in advertising.
The people of Feilding arc reminded of another opportunity of adding to our Wounded Soldiers' Fund and, incidentally, of supporting the Convent Queen,'by attending at,the social and dance to be held in tho Parish Hall to-night, the proceeds of which will swell the funds of the Allied Nations 'Fair. A good programme of dances has been arranged, white for those who prefer to spend a. pleasantevening at the card table ample provision will be made. Dancers and non-dancers will have an oqual opportunity of partaking of the excellent supper which will be provided. The arrangements, which are in the hands of a good committee, should ensure a pleasant evening for everybody.
