London, May 31. The Times, in a leader, says the loss of the battleships in the Dardanelles was a grave matter and struck deep at the national equanimity, which was already ■ seriously distiirbed. If the nation thereby realises the position, more plainly the losses will not be wholly in vain. It is necessary that all should cease speculating on an early end to the war and face existing facts without, anger or fear. While the present conditions obtain we may probably lose other battleships, but it is certain that the new Government is carefully considering the Dardanelles p2 - oblem. Britain is paying heavily for unpreparedness and subsequent reluctance to face the full requirements of the position. She lias awakened now, and is realising that every other consideration must "be subordinated to the necessity for beating Gerniaiiy.
Mr Asquith, in a letter to Mr Gul■laiicl (Liberal Whip), said the new Cabinet implied temporary abandonment of party Government that had been in operation since 1832 and which was believed to be best adapted to the national requirement under normal conditions. It was possible for a sudden upheaval to astonish and thus cause misgiving among many Liberals. The change was justified only by the urgency of the case and the national necessity. The conviction had been forced tipon him and it. cost him infinite personal anxiety that a nonparty Government would be the most efficient instrument for the successful prosecution of-the Avar. When the national cau.so had been vindicated they would again take up the unfinished tasks of the Liberal Party. The Gorman press are anxious as to how Italy's intervention will affect the Balkans. They declare that it is necessary for the diplomats to get busy and impress, especially Roumania, with the significance of the AustroGeniKm successes in Galicia. They angrily say that there must be no repetition of Princo Bulow's failure at Rome, _ and that Italy should have been kicked out of the Alliance long ago.
