PRESENTATION AT BEACONSFIELD.
On Friday evening, during an interval in the Servian social, Mr A. W. Corpc ("Bert"), who is proceeding to the front, was the recipient of a neat wrist watch from the Library subscribers. The presentation was made by Mr W. L. Grice, who voiced the appreciation of Mr Corpe's services in the cause of literature felt by the members. For the long period during which he had acted as Secretary, Treasurer and Librarian, Mr Corpe' 8 energies had been fully taxed to manage Library affairs successfully, as he had often been faced with what seemed to be insuperable obstacles. He warmly applauded Mr Corpe's patriotism in volunteering for active service, and washed him good fortune iv war and a safe return. "Bert," on rising to reply, wag greeted with thunderous cheers. He said that his library work had been a great pleasure to him, but that now duty called him in a different direction. He disclaimed the right to any praise for volunteering, for he did nob think one needed praise for doing his duty. The call of the Empire for every man to do his duty was as plain to-day as it was in the days of Nelson, and he who, being eligible, failed to .respond to the summons, was unworthy of his manhood. He concluded by thanking his friends for their generosity, and sat down amidst tho strains of "He's a jolly good fellow."
