SOME LOCAL NOTES
OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT,
The beautiful rain which fell on Wednesday night and Thursday will have a beneficial effect on pastures and crops, as things were looking a weo bit dry. I, say a wee bit, because the valley is looking nice and fresh as compared with outside districts. A matter which is puzzling some of the suppliers to our local creamery is the fact that the milk yield is diminishing, as also is the test —certainly a most unusual thing. 7lut, no doubt, it is "owing to the war!"
Those responsible for the caro -of the Pohangina domain are making extensive improvements to the grounds. This was very necessary, and, when completed, the residents will have every reason to be proud of their "rec'."
Mr Jack McDonald, who is an inmate of Nurse Roby's private hospital, is making fair progress. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery. Some very large drafts of fat sheep and lambs left this district during the week.
A .private letter received from an ex-New Zealander, how residing in Attleborough, Norfolk, gives a firsthand account of the effects of the war in that locality. The letter runs: "We wonder how the war is affecting New Zealand. Isn't it dreadful? We have :i number of wounded billetted in this town. Our cornhall is changed into a Red-cross Hospital. AYe have been to see the wounded, some of whom had been 23 days in the trenches, and have dreadful stories ■to relate. They have seen the Germans slab the wounded and do' all they are reported to have done. There are 800 soldiers expected here shortly, and private people have to accommodate them. The Government pay their board. " Tho wounded soldiers are to bo entertained at an evening, and our little son has been invited. He tells them great tales about-New Zealand, which pleases the Tommies immensely." .
