THE GREAT BATTLE OF LODZ.

How the Russians Slaughtered the

Germans.

And Yet Berlin Mafekings it as a Victory

Ahlers Sentenced to Death for Treason

in Britain.

Tripoli is Making Trouble for Italy.

France's Seat of Government Paris Again.

The special feature of last night's messages is a detailed account from a London paper's war correspondent of the great battle at Lodz. The account shows into what a frightful trap the Germans fell, and the terrible price they paid in lives. Yet the people of Berlin made a joyful celebration of it! What a penalty the Kaiser and his warlords will have to pay presently for such a deception of their nation. There is more work being done by the. allies fleet off the Belgian coast. Germany's intrigue with Turkey has resulted in Britain finding friends, instead of foes, amongst the tribes of the East. To-day's news shows that Germany is seeking to divert Italy's attention from the main issue by plottings in Tripoli. The folks in England are stirring up the nests of spies effectively, her latest action being the sentencing to death of Akleis, who was Germany's Consul at Sunderland. His crime is treason. Though the Servians have lost. 100,000 men to date, they are inflicting heavy losses on the Austrians, whom they now have out run. Berlin messages say Germans are to make another violent effort to reach Calais. What a hope ! The Bulgarians say the time is not yet for them to enter the arena. There is no greater indication of a happy Christmastide than Ts conveyed in to-day's message that the French Government has returned to Paris from Bordeaux.
