(Received October 3, 10.5 a.m.) Petrograd, October 2. , Russian suocesses at Augustwo and Kopciow, north-west of Grodno, imply that the German centre is broken. The Russians opened the sluices, rendering the approaches to Osowieto fortress impassable. German attacks on the Russian right wing, yrith a. view to delaying operations in Ga■licia, were thus frustrated. The Germans' casualties at Druetki numbered 20,000. Many German guns were embedded in the mud. The whole of the military and civil administration at Cracow is in German hands, and General Dankey has an army of 150,000 Austrians outside Cracow. (Received October 3, 10.25 a.m.) Petrograd, October 2. The Russians are before Cracoiv, and the battle has begun. It is officially stated that the German forces at Osotrieth are hurriedly retreating northwards. London Times—Sydney Sun Services (Received Oct. 3, 8 a.m.) ■ London, October 2. An officer, writing from the front, says the great thing is to keep the kit small and watertight. The things most wanted are cigarettes, tobacco, woollen scarves, warm vests, gloves and, above all, light waterproof.capes. The difficulty, he says, is to keep the men dry.
