Feilding Star. Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1914. Produce Prospects.
Compiled before the outbreak of war, i the value of the review and prospects . of the Australasian dairy produce j markets during the past season in London by the expert of the N.Z.L. and M.A. Co. is, of course, largely discounted by subsequent events. There are one or .two points made by the expert, however, that should be pushed home, especially as our producers are just entering upon another season. "Indifferent and inferior quality" butter was sent Home last season, and although N.S.W 7 . was the chief sinner, New Zealanders need to see to it that only the best they can do is good enough for building up New Zealand's trade. The report says of New Zealand: "A considerable proportion of the butter reached a high standard of quality, but a regrettable feature was the presence of ' fishy' flavour in several brands hitherto of excellent reputation." In his forecast, the London expert says: "For various reasons' the outlook for the coming season is very encouraging. We may look for, if anything, an increased demand during the winter season from the American Continent for colonial butter." Even though war has now intervened, we think all prophecies by experts for an excellent 1914-15 season will hold good, especially if the West Coast of . England's markets are supplied. The main troubles have been the open trade routes and getting ships. The British Navy is attending to the first, and the New Zealand- Government gives an assurance as to the second. Therefore, all looks well.
