General Villa, .with 12,000 troops, j fought a bloody battle in the neighbourhood of Gomez Palacio, a village j near here. . , ! Velasco, the Federal commander, in an attempt to check Villa's march, left Torreon and gave battle. I After a fierce engagement, in which I there were heavy losses. Velasco retreated, leaving villages afire, after a heavy artillery duel. The hospitals are full of wounded. Torreon is still holding out. Washington, March 25. Reports reaching the State Department state that there is heavy fighting around Torreon: . The Federal losses are reported to be 700. The rebels are reported to be steadily gaining ground. It is - believed to •be certain that they have captured the city.
