PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION. COMPENSATION CLAIM. Wanganui, March 23. At tlie Arbitration Court to-day Mrs Carlton sued F. Hague for compensation for the death of her husband, who-was employed by defendant as a driver of a wool waggon, and was killed at Utiku on January 15. The defence alleged that there was no proof that the deceased was the husband of the claimant, and that, in any case, she was not dependent upon him for support. The evidence showed ' that Carleton left his wife in Canterbury 17 years ago, and came to Rangitikei district to live. He sent his wife .money for a few years and then ceased doing so. She had never heard anything further of him till his death, although she endeavoured to trace him. In the meantime, she supported herself and brought up a family, but now, owing to ill-health, was unable to work.

Lengthy evidence as to identity was given by those who knew a Mr Carlton in Canterbury, and those who kneyra man of the same name in Rangitikei. At the close of the evidence, the Court declared that it was satisfied a prima facie case of identity had been made out. Argument then proceeded as to whether plaintiff was a partial or total dependent. Judgment was reserved. THE BAD BLOW. Timaru, March 23. Bay yesterday show that Green went to Perry's house and, with Perry's consent, entered the kitchen. Green asked his wife to go for a walk, as he had something to say to her. She refused, and he then produced a revolver. She threw her hands up to protect her head. She was shot in the hand and the upper portion of the body. Green pulled out a razor and made a lunge at her, but she dashed for the, back door, which she managed to get open and scrambled over the back fence and fell into a vacant section adjoining. The only reason she could give for her husband's behaviour is that she de* clined to live with him until he provided herself and children with ! a home.: She had two wounds on the top of her shoulder where the bullets had passed through and afterwards penetrated the neck below the angle of the jaw on the left side. The bullets have been extracted, and she is now progressing towards recovery. Accused is about 35 years of age. Green was charged with attempted murder to-day, and was remanded for a week.
