The greens improved wonderfully and the course was in splendid order. Some of the play was of a particularly high standard, and many good contests were witnessed,- particularly in the professional match between \V. 13. Simpson (Wcflington) and F. G. Hood (Auckland), wliich avi\s carried to fho 19th hole. Professional match, first round: A. \Y. "13. Simpson (Wellington) beat F. G. Wood (Auckland) at the 19th hole. J. A. Clements (G'hristchurch) beat H. Stewart (Napier), 8 up and 6 to play; J. "Watt" (Wellington), beat W. McEwan "(Waiianuqw). 2 up and 1 to play; D.'Hood (Cnristchurcli). beat A. Milliner (Ashburton), 4 up and 3 to At the an mi a!, .meeting of the Goli Association applications for th« champioush'ips tournament wei-e received from Auckland and Napier. On a vote being taken, the tournament was awarded to Auckland."^
