The Admiralty lias decided to accept in special cases the permanent transfer of active service ratings to the Australian Navyj but cannot approve of the ratings being lent. POLICE v. STRIKERS. New York, March 12. At Akron, Ohio, the striking rubber workers attempted to storm the police station and liberate imprisoned strikers. The police defended themselves and fierce .fusilades were exchanged. The strikers retired with several wounded. Many arrests were made. THE TURAKINA. . London, March 12. The Turakfna has been reinsured at fifty guineas. PRINCE OF WALES. The Prince of Wales visits Germany incognito, as the guest of the King of Wurteinburg. ANOTHER BANDIT CAUGHT. Paris, March 12. A bandit named Laecombe was arrested with a bomb fuse and three Browning pistols in his pockets. ON DEFENCE MATTERS. London, March 12. The Associated Chambers of Commerce resolved in favour of universal training. In the House of Lords Viscount Galway will introduce a Bill to institute a ballet to maintain the territorial establishment, any shortage to be drawn from men over thirty years of age. A Blue Book just issued shows that the army is 84,811 below the establishment, but a slight increase of recruits occurred in 1912. Expectations were not realised, owing to cmif ration, trade prosperity, and a preilection among the recruits in favour of the navy. THE KAISER AND THE FORTUNE TAX. Berlin, March 12. It is estimated that the Kaiser's private fortune is £7,400,000 sterling whereon he pays the war tax. The Duke of Saxe Altenburgh is taxable on a fortune of three millions. The Kaiser is fifth on the list of great estates laid under contribution. CANADA AND THE EMPIRE. Ottawa, March 12. In the naval debate Mr Emmerson declared that Lord North's mistake in the past lost Britain her American colonies. Conceivably, Mr Winston Churchill's latest naval memorandum might lose the Empire Canada and Australia. The people of Canada were not inclined to bow down before tb-e Admiralty Lord. LARGE PROPERTY DEAL. • (Recieved March 13, 9a:m.) London, March 12. The Duke of Sutherland has sold to Mr J. S. Stewart, a Canadian, 50,----000 acres in Southeiiandshire. The Duke is a buyer of land in Canada. THE AUCKLAND LOAN. The Auckland Suburban Drainage Board has issued 100,000 4$ per cent, debentures, at 91, repayable in 1924. The list closes on the 15th inst.
