The Feilding Star. Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25, 1912. The Rival Lights.
Giving evidence beforo the Cost of Living Commission, Mr William Ferguson, Managing Director of the Wellington Gas Company, stated the price of gas in Wellington was 5s 5d net per 1000 feet for both lighting and heating purposes. Asked how ; the price compared with electric light, Mr Ferguson said that was controversial. If he were to give that, and it were published, the electric light people would say something different. He contended, of course, that for light and heat gas was cheaper. Before tho same Commission, Mr S. Richardson, Tramways and Electrical Engineer, said the- cost of current to consumers in Wellington was 7d per unit, and the average, cost of lighting a five-roomed cottage was 4s a month. Mr E. Tregear, Chairman of the Commission, remarked that his electric lighting cost him only 2s 3d a month. Hero is some food for thought for Feilding's ratepayers. Electricity at 7d per unit can successfully compote with gas at 5s od per 1000 feet. Surely in Feilding, where it is proposed to charge 9d per unit, it can more than" hold its own with gas at 10-, 6d per 1000 feet?
