Sydney, September 25. The Assembly adopted Mr Meaghher's motion expressing the opinion that the exclusion of publicans from the Commission of Peace was an unwarrantable reflection on a law-abid-ing section of citizens. The Early Closing Bill was read a second time.
Mr Carmichael has promised a Bill specially dealing with Sunday trading. (Received Sept. 25. 9.55 a.m.) Melbourne, Sept. 25.
Premier Fisher, in his speech on moving the second reading of the Maternity Bonus Bill, argued that there was not stigma of charity about the bonus, and it would not knock the spirit out of the people. Many women went through trials at childbirth with little else than their spirit to help them, and the Government was going to help them to have a little comfort as well.
Mr Deakin, Leader of theOppositiono, voiced a protest against the waste of public money on a mere superstituous theory, and the offering of a hait to voters. The allowance, he said, should be limited to cases of actual need.
