Christchurch, Februrary 22, The annual conference of delegates from the Locomotive Engine Drivers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Associa tion was resumed to-day.
It was agreed to unanimously protest against' the fieavy'punishme'nts inflicted, upon loco. men. The principle of conciliation for .dealing with grievances was affirmed, with a Board consisting of two members representing the Association, two the Department, and a Conciliation Commissioner. ...
Resolved: .'That all. accidents on ithe railways be enquired into by an impartial Board of Trade, on similar lines.'to the British Board of Trade. That overtime rates be paid between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., time and a quarter to be paid to men after doing fourteen hours' work, and double time for \vork dona over fourteen hours on Sundays. It was decided that ten hours should bo the minimum time a man should be booked off for rest between days of long hours. PASSES IN WAR OFFICE EXAMINATIONS. ' Wellington, February 23. The following officers of the New Zealand staff corps and Royal New Zealand Artillery have passed, the examination for promotion, recently conducted by the British War Office: Passed for Major, Captains Brown, Dngan, Symon (Wellington), Potter, Smyth (Canterbury). Passed for Captain: Lieutenants Andrews,.Blair (Canterbury), Burgess, King, Melville, Morton (Auckland), Hume (Wanganui), Lampen, Standish (NewPlymouth), Powles and Bosworth j (Palmerston North).
