BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYBIGHT. [.PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Sydney, December 19. Interest in the first test match between Australia and the M.C.C. .team is maintained, the fourth day's play attracting another large crowd of spectators. Australia's first innings yielded 447 runs, and the Englishmen's 318, when stumps were drawn on Monday, Australia had lost only one wicket for 119, Kelleway (47) and Clem Hill (49) being the not out men.
THE AUSTRALS BATTING. The weather was hot and blustery. The wind blew clouds of dust across ! the wicket. Hill and Kellewav resumed batting, and, iv direct opposition to yesterday's tactics, Hill especially being brilliant, his best stroke being a glance to fine leg, which he played with the utmost precision. Kelleway also scored mostly behind the wicket through the agency of late cuts. Hill's 50 occupied 101 minutes, and Kelleway's 140 minutes, and a total of 150 was the result of 152 minutes' play. Hill, in attempting to get Foster around to leg, was ?lean-bowled. The .partnership added 121.
"With Armstrong in, Hearne bowled full tosses and long hops. Douglas relieved Foster, and his first over brought about Kelleway's downfall — bowled off his pads. He hit nine fours, and was in 183 minutes.
Trumper, at 14, hit out at Douglas, •and the ball struck the edge of the bat and went straight up, the bowler taking an easy catch. Armstrong played the bowling freely, but at 28 was completely beaten by a fast ball from Foster, which cliymed his bails. Ransford went on steadily. Hordern started playing Foster freely. Barnes was bowling the ol?* theory with four men in the slips, but the 'batsmen refused invitations to hit. Then he bowled leg breaks, with six men on the on side, but this bait was taken warily. Hordern played flukily, and at IS Foster cleaned bowled him.
AVhen Minnett went in, it was evident that his foot was very sore, and iie had great difficulty in running be-t-iyeen the wickets. Ransford did not display much anxiety to score, patting everything, except loose balls. He played a short one from Barneshard to Rhodes at point, who made a remarkable catch. Ransford batted 87 minutes and hit four fours. Minnett was bowled by Douglas at 17, in the next over, and with the last ball before the tea adjournment Cotter was out leg-before to Douglas. Carter and AVhitty added 25 before Carter was caught by Gunn at longon ofi Foster. M.C.C. SECOND TERM.
Hobbs and Kinneir again opened to the bowling of AVhitty and Cotter. Kinneir should have been dismissed after scoring one, Armstrong missing an easy chance at first slip off Cotter. The same bowler's next over saw the
dismissal of Hobbs, who hit up 22 iv i! minutes, including four tourers. KRneir had another life at S, this tune Kelleway. at second slip, dropping him off Cotter, and yet again at 177 _ Hordern dropping an easy catch off his own bowling.
