" ESMERALDA" AT THE LV-
CEUM TO-NIGHT,
Tlie choicest music and the best of pictures will be in combination at the Lyceum to-night. The following clipping from the Manawatu Standard gives an indication of the big attraction: "There was a big house at the Zealandia Hall on Monday night, a bigger one last night, when that magnificent and ornate coloured Pathe fiinfo'l -"Esmeralda' was shown. There aro four most finished character studies in this remarkably line faithful pourtrayal of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, ; Notre Dame de raris." Mile. Nnpierkowski, in the name part, simply commands attention by the intensity of her .acting, and it is easy to understand her being the idol of lihe French opera. The characterisation, of Esmeralda is one which only one possessing histrionic talents of quite an exceptional order could atLompt. The French tragedienne emerges therefrom with Hying colours. Another very exacting part is that of Quasimod, the ill-slmpcn bellringer. M. Henri Krauss, of the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre, gives an exceedingly clever and finished impersonation. He shares with Mile. Napierkowski the chief honours so far as the principals are concerned. McGarry and M. R. Alexandre, both of the Theatre Francais, the former as Claude Frollo, the priest iv anguish between love and duty, and tho latter, who pays the penalty of winning Esmeralda's affections, aro rarely gifted artists. This great dramatic production is superbly staged throughout, and some of the tableaux, of which there are no less than 60, are veritably triumphs of stagecraft." There are other fine pictures to-night. A special " jismerakla " matinee has been arranged for Friday afternoon for the convenience of visitors from the country. PRICE'S PICTURES. Patrons of Price's Pictures this evening will have a special opportunity of witnessing one of the most varied progra'nnnes, including dramatic, comedy, scenic, and educational. Among them is a beautiful "Topical Pathe Gazette," which places before the public eye all the grandeur that"nature wishes for. ORer pictures of equal importance being "A Deal in Indians," "Two AVolves and a Lamb," "Ice Effects Odessa," Beauty Spots Prince Olaff's Ladd, '*' Eugene Grandit." " Their first Misunderstanding" (comedy), and a splendid educational film, "Farming and Acquaintances." This programme accompanied with the well-known orchestra is well worthy of patronage.
