THE KAISER'S SLIP.
TACTLESS REMARK AROUSES STORM OF "CRITICISM.
Berlin, October 31
The German Emperor has once more called down on his head the displeasure of his own people by a somewhat indiscreet and thoughtless utterance. His Majesty yesterday received in audience Bishop Munsch, the head of the German mission in German East Africa. In the general discussion on missionary work which ensued, the Kaiser expressed hi s opinion that the black man should be taught religion, but that it was not necessary that he should be imbued with extreme piety. "Mankind must have religion," said the Kaiser, "but must also work." His Majesty then inquired as to the progress of the Mahometan faith in Africa, and delivered himself of the following remark:— "We must work energetically against the spread of the Moslem faith, otherwise Islam may prove a grave danger to our colonies." This speech has roused a storm of unfavourable comment, as.only a few weeks ago the Kaiser was hailed by several thousands of Mohametans as the. "Protector of Islam."
