BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING,
REPORTS AND OTHER MATTERS
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Goodbehere) , and Crs. J. T. Barry, A. M. Ongley, G. H. Saywell, G. Wells, 11. Heald, and G. J. Harford. Apologies were received 'fronr Crs. A", ltichniond, B. E. Murphy, and P. Thomson. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho following letters wero received and dealt with : — From the Public Health Department, in reference to the proposed loan of £7000 for sewerage extensions, stating the Minister could not see his way to accede to the request to grant pcrniision to borrow the sum, "without consulting tho ratepayers, as tho sum was so large.— Tho Mayor thought the best course to adopt was to proceed with the loan at once. Bo proposed that the matter be referred to the Works Committee, to ascertain the cost of making connection, -to house boundaries, and then proceed with the poll. Cr. Saywell seconded the proposal, which was adopted. From the Railway Department, agreeing to the Council laying a water -am under the railway line, provided the Railway Departmentwas protected in the usual way.—The Mayor and Cr. Heald to sign the necessary documents. •From Messrs Abraham and Williams, stating they did not now require Victoria Park for graing purposes.—Received.
Prom Mr C. W. Brodie. Wellington, in reply to a letter re'his building ou the corner of Eyre and ratigi streets, stating he would be willing' to effect improvements if they would be permanent; but if he put in windows they would be broken by larrikins. —The Mayor said this building was a horiblo disgrace to the town. If the windows were boarded up, it would look bad enough, but better than it does at present.
Cr. Saywell proposed that Mr Brodio be asked to board up the windows. If this had not the desired effect, he would move further.
Cr. Heald seconded the motion, which was agreed to. From secretary Feilding Band submitting programme lor nine concerts.—Received.
From the Returning Officer, giving; result electric light poll.—Received. From Plumbers' Union, circular regarding plumbers' dispute.—Received.
From Mr E. Short, applying for water connection to his woolshed, Kimbolton road.—Granted on usual terms. From Prico's Pictures Proprietary and Lyceum, a skins: for permission to givo programmes on Christinas night. ■ —• Granted, provided programmes are submitted to and approved by the Council's representative. FINANCE. The committee recommended : — 1. That a paper cabinet bo purchased for the Town Clerk's office at a cost of £5 ss. 2. That in future six months from tho completion of nny new drainage extension be the limit time in which drainage connection will bo made from tho sewer to the road boundary free to the ratepayers.
The committee beg to report that it has received a letter from the Dannevirke Borough Council offering; a water cart for sale and recommend that that Council be informed that we do not require another watercant at present. —Adopted. LIBRARY. The committee recommended the following accounts for payment: W. Carthew, books, £10 os 10d; Brett Company, Graphic, £2 10s; Morrison and Bissett. books, £2 2s 3d; Blundell Bros., Ltd., papers, 13s; E. H. Fisher, printing, £32: total, £47 11s Id. The Committee recommended :—" 1. That the wages of James Benge, slaughterman's assistant, be increased from 2os per week to 30s per week. 2. That the butchers be informed that tho Council will bo prepared to slaughter pigs up to 1201b at Is 6d each, and that it is the intention of tho Council to enforce section 75, sub-section D, of the Borough Bylaws, on and after January 1, 1912, which provides that all meat sold by butchers must be killed and dressed at tho abattoir. Adopted. WORKS. The Committee recommended that Mr 'Andrew be informed that it is the intention of the Council as far as possible to have the footpaths in all streets tarred on one side as soon as possible. The Committee beg to recommend ■tihat the following streets be tarred this year:— Bowen street, west side, chains; Warwick street, bridge to King street, south side; "Warwick street, Grey to West street, oiorth side, 28 chains; King street, south side, 14 chains; Queen street, north side, 22? chains; Grey street, Manchester street to Warwick street, north side, 23 chains; total, 106 chains. The above work is estimated to cost £400. Report adopted. BATHS AND RESERVES. The Committee reported that the baths custodian and borough lamplighter resigned his position as from November 21 last. Tho Conimiitee accepted his resignation and advertised for applications for the position. The Committee selected Mr S. Gavan to iill the position temporarily, and recommend Jiat lie be appointed at a salary of £2 10s per week payablemonthly.—Held over.
The Committee further reported fihat it had given instructions for 100 failings to be purchased for \ ictoria Park.
