ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr F. S. B. Waite, County Engineer, presented the following report: Since the last meeting of the Council most of the contracte have been signed and work has been commenced. With regard to the contracts left in my hands i beg to report as follows: No. 162.—1 have given this contract, to Mr "W Bloomfield, he being the lowest tenderer. No. 163 and 164.—1 arranged to give the contractors threepence extra for all metal taken from the Waituna Creek. No. 176.—Messrs McNae and Knight took this contract after coming to a satisfactory arrangement re cutting back points, and the,work is to be commenced on Monday next.

During the month I have been round the north end of the county, and taken the levels at the proposed tunnel on the Ap.iti-Main. South road. I have prepared a detailed report on the work, and also plans and estimates of same. 1 inspected the Pourangaki bridge site, in company with Messrs Phynn and Bonnor, and have prepared a rough estimate and report on the proposed work. Final approval has been given u> the proposals for several of the Government grants. Metal has been taken from tLs County pit at Rangiwahia for ibf purpose of metalling the Cemetery road. No permission was obtained to use the pit, and the stripping ha«. been thrown back, so that the contractor next in the pit will ua/o double work and will have to cart it clear of the pit before getting irs metal. 1 understand that all labour in connection with this work has been voluntarily given. The road into the pit at the back of the County office has been completed for a distance of 22 chains. is a short length of fence to erect and a gate to hang at the section boundary. This I intend to have done at once. The metal obtained at the euJ of the road is of very good quality, and gives promise of a good high face. A road is being cut into a new pit on Mr Fowler's property, and metalling will be commenced on_ the adjoining contracts as soon as it is finished.

I had the grader over the Mangapipi road and the result has been very satisfactory. Good work has also been done on the Mangoira and on Hare's roads, thus saving a lot of extra trimming when these roads are metalled. It is my intention, if time will allow, to put the grader on to the Auputa and Mangatohu roads prior to metalling being commenced there.

The bridge on the Auputa road has been erected and is a great improvement on the old structure. ;

I find that many of the smaller bridges in the County will_ require a good deal of repairing this coming year, mostly in re-decking At the Hayne's Creek, on the Cheltenham cross road, the bridge will jfequire further protective works, aY +he stream has Rcoured out at the- -foot of one of the piles.
