LONDON MEAT MARKETS.

The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Co. send us their weekly market report, dated August 5, as follows:—

Tho warmer weather at the end of last week made the retailers very cautious in their buying operations, and consequently there was a bad finish to the market, low prices being taken to effect clearances. After the Bank holiday a rather better tone prevailed and prices for most descriptions are held fairly firm.

New Zealand 'Mutton.--Arrivals since our last issue consist of Mamari 43,86S carcases, Coriutbic 27,588 carcases and Nerehana 42,776 carcases. Business in this meat is still very j quiet, but it is possible to report some very slight improvement in the enquiry and values show more steadiness than for some little, time past, at an advance of about £d per lb. Canterbury's range from _i|d per lb for good light weights down to per lb for heavy sheep. North Islands and Southlands are quoted at 3£d to 3£d per lb. Light weights continue the most sought after. South American Mutton.—The Zermatt has arrived with 28,609 carcases and El Argentino brings about 37,000 carcases. The improvement in this section is scarcely noticeable. Good Argentine sheep can be bought on the London market at 3£d to 3£d per Hi, and similar rates are quoted in the provinces, but heavy sheep are sold below these figures. Frozen Lamb.—The week's receipts comprise 177,490 carcases from NewZealand, 13,898 carcases from Australia and 2148 carcases from South, America. Tho majority of holders hare

at length recognised that the recent decline in prices was scarcely warranted, and a better tone has been established. The demand continues active and medium - weights are a little less difficult to move. Good light weight Canterbury's are worth sjd per lb and medium weights about od per lb. North Islands are .selling from 4|d to od per lb. Australians are nominally quoted at Id to -P a d per jb.
