The Feilding Star. Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 14, 1910. Auckland Wins Again!
MoRK backing and filling! A report comes from Wellington that the Government, after all its fierce attitude, has backed down in regard to a second residence for the Governor and keeping up Government House at Auckland. The latter establishment, which was re-
cently denuded of its furniture, with the intention of the site being used tor University purposes, is now to be refitted for the accommodation of Lord Islington. The grounds comprise eleven acres, and it has been decided that 7} acres shall be retained as grounds in connection with the house, while 3J acres will be set aside for University purposes. After all, we are not surprised at the revised opinion of the Government, for we wore aware ITiat Lord Islington, during his recent brief run up for the Winter Show, made a close inspection of the Government House and grounds, and was greatly pleased with both. But it is undoubtedly a great extravagance that New Zealand should have to maintain two Government Houses, (■.specially as the Auckland house is closed during the greater part of the year, and the gardens and grounds cost no small sum fo keep up. As Lord Islington has leased a country residence in the Wairarapa and is said to have secured leases of houses in Christchurch and Dunedin, why should an exception be any longer made in Favour of Auckland?
