SUCCESS OF THE SCHOOL BALL
The Halcombe School ball last night proved fully equal to any of its predecessors iii every respect. Although the great majority of the sixty couples there were not in fancy dress, those who did honour to the occasion produced some of the most becoming and best designs seen in the district. Of the iadies, the best costumes were those of Miss Mabel Reid (Milkmaid), Miss Annie- Managh (Wind), Miss McChesney (Nurse), Miss Aikeuliend (Plerette), Miss Reid (80-Peep), Miss Pilcher (Daisy), and a Maori lad as •'Hinenioa." *By fa.r the best costume worn by the men was Mr Cookson's '•Knave of' Hearts,'"' which was not only complete from cap and wig to shoes, but was an object-lesson to designers of rich fancy-wear, and became the wearer excellently. Included in the other costumes were : Mr A. Grantham (Steward), Mr A. Reid (Fending Stab), Mγ A. Bel (Advocate), Mr F. Reid (Stockman), Mr 11. Clements (Black and White), Mr J. Jones (Pierrot), Mr G. Heappy (Htinterville M.R.), Mr J. Crook (i'eilding M.R.), Mr J. Cuff (N.Z.R.), Mr Wattani (Footballer). Mr %. Pleasants made an excellent M.C., the btanway Band discoursed sweet music, and Messrs J. Small, L. Pleasants, and J Heappy contributed extras. The Chairman of the School Committee thanked the promoters of the function for their exertions in aid of the Committee's funds, and Mr l< red. Pirani briefly expressed the indebtedness of the Visitors for the kindness shown them, and paid a tribute to the self-reliance of Halcombe folk in school matters. The ladies of the district provided an abundance of good things for the sumptuous supper.
