Six hundred men of the Wiltshire Regiment, accompanied 13y Lord Methuen, Military Commander-in-Ghief for South Africa, left for Pietermaritzburg to surprise a militia camp. A storm caused a watercourse to •rise suddenly, and 150 of their number were isolated on an island caused by the torrent. Three lives were lost.
