PER PRESS ASSOCIATION, TWO ACCIDENTS.

Nelson, Marcli 29. A young man. named William Porter died at Pokomro early this morning from the effects of a riding accident. He was fouiid lying on the road at 1 a.m. and was taken to a shed. On the shed being visite<l at 8 o'clack it was found that' Porter was dead. liotorua, March 29. An explosion occurred in the Enner Glynn Coal Mine to-day through a miner named John Tilley entering ■a shaft with a naked light. Tilley, who was badly burned about the 'head and arms, was removed to the hospital. . A BUTCHER INJURED. Inglewood, Marcli 30. A. batcher named Anderson was going his rounds when hie horse became unmanageable. The man jumped clear before the trap capsized, but sustained a compound fracture of the leg. He was sent to the New Plymouth Hospital. AN EASTER GALE. The usual Easter howling gale is blowing.

A FLOODED TOWNSHIP. Auckland, March 30. The Ohinomuri River flooded its banks at 7.30 o'clock this morning. The streets of the township are flooded to a depth of three feet in places. The water is .running down the main street at a great rate, and the lower p-arts of the town are being rapidly submerged. Most of the shops in -the main street are flooded, and houses in Rye Lane, Puke and Junction roads are more or less flooded. So far no more damage is r.eporteed, but tlie flood is bound to do a good deal of destruction. HAVING A WET TIME. Gisborne, March" 30. Ihe storm forecasted by the Government Meteorologist duly arrived. A strong easterly gale is raging with heavy rain, 3.39Ln. being the record at 9 o'clock this morning for the previous twenty-four hours, making a' total of 6.69 in. for the forty-eieht hours. A NARROW ESCAPE. Napier, Marcli 30. A five-roomed dwelling, owned by ■Mr M. Lascelles, and occupied by Mr W. J- Sandford, was totally destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. The flames were fanned by a heavy southerly gale. Everything was burnt, and the inmates had a narrow escape. The insurance on the building was £200 in the Sun Office, and on the furniture £100 in the London and Lancashire Office. LOCAL BODIES ESCAPE. iDunedin, March 30. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr this morning met delegates from the local bodies and ispreseaitatives of the General Labourers' Union interested in work controlled by local bodies. Applications for exemption by the- City iCouncil amd the Harbour Board were opposed by Mr McManus (representing the Labourers' Union), but they were granted by Mr Triggs.
