A terrible fire occurred in a dancing ili-all .attached to an inn at Verekito. It was a barnlike structure, decorated with pine branches which 'had been used in a former entertainment, and were dry as tinder, bearing Chinese lanterns and burning candles. After .the ticket-holders had been admitted, a single narrow door to the building -was nailed up to prevent any unauthorised access.
The flames spisead ■with astounding rapidity. The dresses of the dancers be-aame ablaze, and tlie women and children were crushed and .trampled underfoot. T;he door remained closed, and the fall of the roof completed the tragedy. Four hundred men, women, and children were killed or badly burned in the disaster. (Received "March 30, 9.15 a.m.) Vdenna, March 29. An official report states that 300 people were killed, and 70 injured, all seriously, by the Vekerito disaster.
