FARMERS NOT KEEN ON IT NOW.
THAT ±i) Ll3. INCREASE
BETTER LET WELL ALONE."
The second meeting held in connection with the proposal to establish a co-operative bacon-curing factory in the Feilding district was held yesterday in Hook's Sample Rooms. The time I'oi , starting the meeting wha 2.15, but it was nearly 3 o'clock before a start was made, owing to the casual manner in which the delegates strolled along. Mr J. Bruce, who was voted to the chair, said he believed that if a cooperative bacon-curing company were started in the Feilding district it would ultimately be a success; but- in view of the lack of interest being shown, perhaps it would be as well to let it drop for the present. Mr McFarland said if the members of the Committee formed would give some idea of their experience- in canvassing for support, it would put the thing in a better way before the meeting. His experience had been that dairy farmers did not want to go into the company now. Mr Robinson (Bunnythorpe) said he found that whilst six weeks ago the farmers wanted a co-operative company, now that the price oi bacon ■had boon increased by a they wanted to let well alone. Qlr Whitaker (Rongotea) said the farmers wanted a company, but they did not want to go into it themselves. He believed the time had come for the fanners to have a company. He would advise them not- to go to a proprietary company, which would take every ounce they could from the farmer. Mr Usmar (Heaconsnold). said the additional halfpenny recently given had kept from this meeting the farmers from this district. Mr J. Michie (Hiwinui), after saying there, was no support from his district, proposed that the movement be deferred for the present. Seconded by Mr TJsmar. Mr McFarland said he was .sorry and disgusted at the lack of interest shown by farmers in this district in their own affairs. Mr Henson fAwahuri) he was a Dane by birth, and in Denmark all the bacon factories -were co-operative. Here they wove afraid of co-opera-tion. Thfty only looked at the moment, and not a couple of years ahead. They believed in the principle of co-operation, but were afraid "to put it into practice. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr Michie. speaking for the meeting, expressed thanks to Mr Bruce for hk work as chairman, and to the loc.nl press, for support and publicity. Mr Bruce, in returning thanks, said lie regretted they were not successful 'in getting the co-operative factory started. Tt would have been a splendid thing for the district, and would hnve been by no .means n failure. There was no district better than Feilding for a bacon-curing factory. were also accorded Mr Wliifoker for hie work as secrota? - y. and it was decided to make arrangements to defray the expenses incurred .
