A PROBLEM IN AMATEURISM
For 20 years South Melbourne struggled for tilie football supremacy of Victoria without success. " The country was scoured for players, and from all parts of the State local champions were Brought to South Melbourne at "enormous expense/ but still they could not win the premiership. In 1909 the committee decided to devote its attention to local .juniors. Members expected, therefore, thai the excuse of local men would not be as great as those of strangers. The local men won the promaership, but it cost £243."2 16s 5d to do rt. Nearly £1900 was spent directly on the players, and though the committee bad £2437 9s 7d nass through its hands, it spent all of it except £4 13s 2d. Mathematicians may he able to solve the following problem: If an amateur premiership costs £2432 16s sd, what would be tfie outlay with professional players?
