The detectives have arrested Harold Pennell, charged with failing to account to his alleged partners, Harman arifl Bowman, for money claimed b ythem in respect of ii successful ticket in TattersalPs sweep. Three tickets were taken in Pennell's name. The amount involved in this case is STTTI 9s 3d. At the Police Court this morning Pennell was ; remanded to appear at "vvaihi with' Kneebone (previously committed). GOOD FOR THE CITY. Dunedin, Alarch 17. Dunedin electric tramways for the year ended March 2 show receipts £65,799, working expenses £36,401, and a profit amounting to £29,398. A DAVELLING BURNED. Hastings, Alarch 17. A 13-roomed house", owned and occupied by Airs 3. Baniforth, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon, the occupants being away at the time. Insurances on the building are £250 in the National, and on the furniture £200 in the Alliance. KITCHENER AND COMPULSORY SERVICE. Wellington, March 17. The Po6t states that Lord Kitchener has impressed upon the Government the expediency of extending the age up to which compulsory service may be enforced to 25 years. It is understood that the Government has not yet fully considered tho matter with the view of taking definite action. THAT NINEPENNY FUND. Dunedin, March 17. On the_ subject of the withdrawal of the ninepenny grant to School Committees, the Otago Education Board te-day resolved to express strong regret to the Alinister.
