TWO-POWER STANDARD AND SUPREMACY,

The amendment of Air Lough, Liberal member for Islington AVest, to reduce the navy vote by 3000 men was negatived by 225 to 34. The Hon. Reginald Alc-Keima, First Lord of the Admiralty, stated that the two-Power standard defined by Premier Asquith on Alay 26 was not exceeded by the Estimates of the Admiralty. He considered that five Dreadnoughts were not wanted before 1913. It was also expedient to delay commencing them until the latest possible vote was ultimately agreed to. Lord Brassey, presiding at the Jubilee meeting of tlie Association of the Chamber of Commerce, said that a two-Power naval standard must bo maintained, the laying down of two British keels to one by Germany. At the instance of Sir Albert Spicer, chairman of the London Chamber of Commerce, it was resolved to approve of the principle proposed at the Imperial Council of Commerce in Sydney—that the naval supremacy of the British Empire must be maintained. The object is to establish Lord Beresford's contention that there is a shortage of cruisers for the protection of commerce. Alelbourne, Alarch 17. Premier Deakin has announced that tho contract for the armoured cruiser which will be the flagship of the Commonwealth fleet has been let to Messrs John Brown and Co., at Glasgow, and will be completed in two years.
