RELF ON COACHING.
'According] to the London publication, Cricket, Mr A. G. Relf, who left for England by the Ruapehu,..will receive £500 .for his services as "coach" in Auckland—about three months' work. In previous seasons, says the same authority, he was paid £350. In all probability, Mr Relf told a Post representative yesterday, his next winter will be spent in India with an old cricketing friend of his. The crack all-rounder has this to say (and it has special application—Mr Relf did not say so—for the local cricketing association): — " 'Coaching is an absolute essential, here or anywhere else, for the young player. In employing a 'coach' the penny-/wise-pound.foolish' policy is unwise. Get tho very best man "available and pay. him well. Yes; an 'allround player who can demonstrate what he preaches—not only an expert cricketer, hut a man reliable morally, who coulcl enforce his discipline easily, and bo looked up to." Concerning such interesting topics as New Zealand cricket, the Australian team at present in these islands, our cricketing future, and other debatable aspects of the game, Air Relf preserves a discreet silence.
