Mr Short's Enterprise.

This is in regard to the Squire of Parorangi's decision to take some valuable stud sheep to the Argentine Siiow for the honour and credit of New Zealand. The remarkable thing is that, although the Show is to be held only three months hence, the Government lias not taken any steps to be represented there, and has not even shown any desire to help the enterprising breeders who arc going to tho expense and trouble of taking stock to the Argentine. We know — and the Hon. Mr Millar will know to-morrow—that Mr Short is taking with him the most valuable cargo of stud sheep that ever left New Zealand, and it can easily be understood that tliis cannot be done for Is Gd. Yet the Government is not even offering to contribute 6d, although New Zealand generally will reap the benefit from such a striking advertisement as the Parorangi Romney sheep will provide. We think itwould be a graceful act on the part of the. Government if it appointed Mr Short as New Zealand's Special Commissioner at the Argentine Exhibition, and also contributed something towards the cost incurreel by Messrs Short and Perry in sending their, sheep to the Show. Again, the Government should use such a fine opportunity as the Argentine Exhibition to open a market there for our producers. The South American republic is only three weeks , voyage from New Zealand, and presents an excellent market for New Zealand's fruit. And as there are many wealthy families in the Argentine, our Health and Tourist Department should get in touch with them by using tho coming -Exhibition as a means of bringing our health resorts and fishing facilities under the notice of'the Argentines. These suggestions may be late in the making, but there is yet time to carry into effect a scheme- that should prove to the advantage of New Zealand in the immediate- future.
