The Feilding Star. Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette. FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 1910. Our Bisley Meeting.
The Dominion's annual Bisley meeting ogens to-day on the national ranges at Trenthain, in the Hutt— the Valley of Fish Tails, as disgrunted shootists are apt to call it. The meeting will be the largest and probably the most interesting rifle tournament yet held in New Zealand (600 entries), for not only is there an unusually large number of marksmen attending from corps and clubs, but a, rep. team has been sent over from Australia. Another attraction is the possibility of a team being sent to England's Bisley meeting by i\ew Zealand this year. Even with such a high standard of marksmanship as has been recorded all through both islands this season, it is not impossible to trade upon past experience to indicate results. Even before the meeting opens we are tempted to make a tip. Keep an eye upon exchampion 11. J. King,,, of the Opaki llirle Club, Masterton.' He has: been very consistent, and has put up some good scores this season. Another exclnunpion, and easily the most brilliant of our marksmen, Captain (better known as Bandmaster) King, of the Linwood (Christchurch) Rifles, has also been putting in some fine work. The Vennell brothers, of Tβ Wiharau (Wairarapa , !, of whom there are enough to put a team on the butts, will have a good representative a-t this year's Bisley in E.E.V. Ivummer, of the Te Wharau Club, is also si hummer. It is an unusual thing for a mounted man to shine as a crack shot, but this year much is expected from Sergeant A. 11. Wills, of the Southland M.R, H. Marshall is again the star performer of the Karori Club; Sergt. James, of Napier, who won the £100 prize recently at an Australian meeting, stall has his eye in ; Masefield, of Pioton, has improved still further; L. Belk, of feilding, who shot into third place in the Featherston Match and sixth in the Carterton Match in the Wairarapa meeting this week, is the promising hope of this district; ex-cham-pions Ching and Milroy, of Nelson, •will be there again; Sergt.-Major Maingay, of Piako, ihas generally to be reckoned with; and both eyes will be kept throughout the coming meeting upon the Australian contingent, and especially upon that consistent aiul brilliant Syclneysider, Sergt. McCalley, who is not unfamiliar with the tricks of the Trentham ranges. No word is to hand of the form of the champion, Lieut. Duncan, of Denniston. It will be evident from the above notes tSiat the 1910 Bisley is to be a meeting of'champions.
