JOHN BURNS.
TO GET A WELL-DESERVED " RISE." FROM £2000 TO £5000. BY ELEOTEIO TELEGRAPH —COPYBIGHT [.FEE.PRESS ASSOCIATION.! (Received March 4, 8.5 a.m.) London, March 3. Premier Asquith proposes to raise the salary of the Hon. John Burns, President of the Local Government Board, from £2000 to £5000. [This is probably some compensation to Mr Burns for not having been promoted to one of the more important portfolios in the Cabinet. Ministers who are Presidents of departments receive salaries of £2000 each, whilst a ' Secretary receives £5000. Sir Ed- ! ward Grey, the Earl of Crewe, Mr ; Churchill, Viscount Morley, and Mr j Haldane are on the £5000 mark. !Mr Burns has been doing work quite j equal to that of the gentlemen named. I In its notes on the* result of the reI cent elections, the London Express, a strong opponent of the present GoI vernment, wrote: "The Right Hon. J John Burns (R.) is President of the 1 Local Government j>oard, and in this position has been one of the greatest successes of Mr Asquith's Ministry. Employed as a boy at Price's candle . factory, and subsequently apprentici ed as an engineer atMillbank. Tn his , earlier days ho was a violent Socialj ist, but a long experience of public J affairs so changed his outlook on life that :h© i.s now regarded by many members of his own party as too Conservative in his views. Was a leader in the dock strike of 1889. A man of great ability and flawless honesty."]
