[PEB I'BESS ASSOCIATION.^ Lyttelton, May. 9. J ust as the Now Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Rakaia Ayas unmooring preparatory to sailing for London via' Monte Video, Tenerdffe and Gibraltar, smoke was observed coining through the flooring, of ,the chief engineer's room. Examination revealed an incipient fire in -the after port bunker, where the coal was smouldering, smoking, -and steaming. Water was poured' in and' the smoke ceased. >A quantity of coal was removed,- and a survey made by Lloyds' surveyor. The manager of the Shipping Company states that the fire, which, was not serious, was caused by the naked steam pipe passing throujgh the bunker covered with coal which was fired by the heat. Tho departure of the Rakaia is postponed till to-morrow morning. For Chronic Ohest Complaints, Woods' Great Peppermint Core, 1b 6d and**l. "SUCROSINE" FED. Mt J. H.
