JUNIOR MATCHES.

PALMERSTON (9) v. FEILDING (4) Palmerston were too good in both hack and forward play for the Feilding team dn this match, which was { .played on Feilding No. 2 ground. Ihe passing of the White backs was away ahead of that of their opponents, and the forwards worked together solidly. Feilding's play was more intermittently brilliant than consistent. They were' too slow at following up, and showed a lack of training which was pitiable. . Feilding kicked off with the wind ! and sun against them, and were .pressed till they were relieved by a i good mark by tfaddeley. BartholoI mew followed up well, and was getting away nicely when he knocked on. Palmerston sought relief b- a free*, and Stagpoole put in a gocd kick. Feilding were on the defensive for some time, and presently . were compelled to force. in play, Simeon made a nice run for Feilding, but the Palmerston backs got the oval back to Feilding 25, where they got a free for Baddeley holding the ball on the ground. . No coal resulted. Feilding were kept on the defensive, and were again forced. From the kick out. Douglas followed up, and secured tlie ball. With a splendid run, ho got up to the Palmerston 25. where he passed to J. Thompson. Thompson was surrounded, and .passed back to Douglas, who dropped a goal from the midst of , his opponents. 4—o. Feilding then ( bucked up, and had Palmerston on the defensive for some time, but the White backs were good defenders, and gradually the ball went to Feilding 25. After a series of scrums, Gardener, at half, secured for i'almerston, and passed ±o Milieu, who scored. Tho The tFy was not converted. 4 — 3. i'almerston pressed again, and Feildhig forced. Even play followed, with a. great deal of speculating on both sides. ' Douglas made some good line kicks, and Stagpoole and Brisco were prominent for Palmerston. A good run by Hicks took the ball to Palmerston territory, where. Baddeley, trying to emulate Douglas, made a wicked pot at goal, instead of passing it to his fellow-backs. Palmerston ' torced. and the half-time whistle blew with Feilding in the lead.— 4— 3. . At the start of the second spell the ball went to Feilding 25, where Palmerston took a free for off-side. They were awarded a second kick with no charge, Feilding fretting over the mark. This kick was also a failure, and they wore awarded a third five for some reason which was not «]>- parent to the reporter, as Feilding had not played the ball from the first free. The third attempt found the posts— 6— 4. Palmerston followed with, good back play, but splendid kicking by Tura Hughes relieved Feilding. ; Palmerston secured another penalty.— 9— 4. The ball stayed in Feilding 2o for some time, and Simeon and Harris came to tho rescue. Feilding were driven, back again, and were once more forced. The game ended with no further score, leaving Palmerston the winners by 9 points to the 4. For the winners, Stagpoole, Brisco, l*orteous, and Gardner played well, and the whole of the forwards were solid. On the Feilding side, Douglas, Baddeley, Hughes, and Simeon were the best of the backs, and Thompson. Cobbe, and Hicks were the hardest worked of the forwards. Both teams spent too much time in talking, and arguing with the referee and each other. • KIA TOA (11) v. LINTON (0). This match was played on the Palmerston , showground, and resulted in the defeat of Linton by 11 to G. it was an interesting game, and some fast play was seen, the suburbanites showing a distinct improvement on last year's, form. Sheerin and Crawford scored tries for Kia Toa, Skinner converting one and kicking a penalty goal. Tries were obtained for Linton by Herberts and Fitts. BUNNYTHORPE (8) v. OLD BOYS. It was pleasing to find that Bunnythorpe was able to score a win in its second essay, defeating Old Boys by a converted try and a goal from a mark to nil. Complaints are made of the rough state of tihe ground, and Lucas (one of the Old Boys team) sprained his ankle in the first spell.
