POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL

ITS MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Pohangina County Council, was held on Saturday. Present : Crs R. "YV. Brown (Chairman), C. Bailey, B. C. Eglinton, A. A. Wagstaff, H. Howie CI. F. Smith, and H. Burne. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were dealt with as follows : From Mr W. H. Rutherford, re state of Coulters line. The metal needed a coating of clay. — To be attended to. From Mr Chas. Searle, Piripiri, offering to erect substantial fence to reserve on which roadman's cottage stands at 16s per chain, and provide the material. — Accepted, the Council to pay half the cost . From Mr E. Prince, asking for rebate on his' heavy traffic license fee, as he had stopped carting. — Could not be legally done. From Mr E. Cummerfield, Apiti, re water from Bridge road flowing on to his section. — Being attended to. ' From Mr F. J. Roberts, asking the i Council to fence the piece of road next to the swamp at Rauinai. — Engineer to inspect. From the Secretary of the Raumai Hall Co., asking that 12 loads of gravel be dcliercd free. — Granted at cost price. From the Palmers-ton North Sasli and Door Co., asking to be allowed to continue carting timber over the roads while the weather remained good. — Refused. From Mr J. E. Fulton, C.E., offering to design a bridge suitable for London's Ford at one-third the cost of that proposed, providing competitive designs were invited. — Too late to be considered. Applications for position of roadman. — Mr L. T. H'arland appointed. From Mr A. E. Cloutman, Awahou. asking for 20 loads of metal from Whitehead's pit. — Granted, at royal, t-.v. From Mr. William Anderson. Waiata, notifying that he intended to resign care of the telephone office. — j Held over pending other arrange- ! ments. From Pohangina School Committee, ro promised donation towards erection of technical instruction room to school. — Money to be available when room erected. From the Treasury, approving ap- . plication for additional 10 per cent, of £140 on loan of £1400 raised for the erection of the Pohangina Bridge, and £80, 10 per cent, on £800. ENGINEER'S , REPORT. Tho County Engineer reported as follows : — Mangapikopiko Riding.— The metal pits had been stripped and the stone breaking contract was in progress. The road leading to Marton Block bridge is very narrow, and requires fencing. Mr Rankin has permission to fence on the road side. 9006 ft. or timber is required for re-decking the Apiti bridge. This work should be taken in hand as soon as possible. Pohaugina Riding.— A permanent man is to be appointed for the back portion of <the riding. Four teams •are at work repairing with gravel. Messrs Brooking and Hiarkness' road would cost £10 for metalling and £10 for formation. Umutoi Riding.— About 40 yards of gravel is required to repair the road at the top end of Table Flat. I have given instructions for this work to be done. It was stated that there was no public road to Messrs Brooking and Harkness' place, and before spending public money on the proposed road the clerk was instructed to ascertain whether such road rights as •tile settlers named possess through the scenery reserve can be handed over to the Council. TREASURER'S REPORT. Tho Treasurer reported tho balances as under:— General fund, cr., £152; loans account, cr., £650. Ruling accounts:— Awahoa, or., £110; Coal Creek, cr., £14; Mangaone, dr., £172; Mangapikopiko, dr., £7-1; Pohangina, cr., £65; Tamaki, dr., £*bo; Umutoi,< dr., £800. £295 has been received from the Treasury on account of repairs to Pohangina bridge and £200 has been receive! on loan account of Marton block orilge. RESOLUTIONS. Crs. Brown— Burne.— The engineer be instructed to call tenders for redecking the Apiti bridge to <!ujo at Apiti on the 21st, and that tho Js.iwi-' tea County Council be nocififd that it will be required to pay cuitbiid of tho cost. Crs Bailey— Eglinton. — Mr Rounthwaite be informed that ns iiio Council's offer in payment ci his ac::o'?nt amounts to 7 per cent. o?i ti:e cost A the new span of the Pohaugiua cinlge, which, has not yet been «r»u;ted and which, he will not have U>e responsibility of passing, it cannot see- its way to increase same.
