NAVAL DEFENCE.
SOME STRAIGHT TALK. [BT BLEOTBIO TELBGBAPH — COPYBIGHT.] [PEB PBEBB ASSOCIATION.] , (Received May 10, 8.10 a.m.) ' London, May 9. Admiral Lord Charles; Beresford, speaking in the Liverpool Town Hall, after receiving the degree of Doctor of Laws, said that the committee now sitting on the naval defence question was as fair a committee as had ever been summoned before. If they found things were not as they should be — which, he had no doubt they wouia — there was no necessity for a panic or recrimination. "Let us," said Admiral Beresford, "return to the old British 6tyle; lay the whole thing on the table, look at it, and 6ee where the wrong is and calmly and quietly put it right without recrimimaifcion from parties for individuals." * i Admiral Beresford, in a speech at the Southport Physical Training College, sakl he had great faith in Premier Asquith's committee. Many points destined to become public would cause dissatisfaction, but let them bury party feeling, get together and put, tilings right. No party wanted to see the foreigner »here.. . He did not belong to -fchei party in power, but they were taking a, national view of naval affaire and anything he could do to help them he would to the best of his ability. "What has happened is," he declared, "we 'have deferred our liabilities and obligations, and when an individual or nation does that, money must be got somewhere to put things right."
