The Feilding Star, Oraua and Kiwitea Counties Gazette. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1909. Bankruptcy Business.

Hard times and financial stress make for an increase in bankruptcy business, and this is being emphasised by frequent references in the press of the dominion to men who are being driven to seek the shelter of the Court. For quite a pleasantly long spoil the bankrupt was something of a rara avis, especially in* the Feilding district.' But he is coming out again, more's the pity; and : he will happen along far too frequently if the banks do 1 not lessen the tight grip they are still' keeping on the pursestrings. With the oncoming of bankruptcy business, there is a matter of facility and convenience for Feilding that should receive the serious consideration of the Justice Department. Some time ago we complained of tl{e inconvenience that arises here through this" district having to import a coroner from Palmerstou. The same trouble - arises in connection with bankruptcy cases. We are under the jurisdiction of the Palmerston Deputy Official Assignee, and, as with the Coroner, business people here complain that there ;s too nuuoh. rush in dealing with the hearing of local cafl&. The official oomes up by one express train and returns by tljej next. But our ez- | perience has been that our "business | folks either absent themselves alto-

gether from bankruptcy meetings or, if they do attend', they are in an obstructive mood. But neither of these things affect our main contention. It is duo to such a busy district as Feilding that it sihouid iliave its own group of officials, and there should be no importations from outside towns to do our business.
