WHAT THEY COST. STATEMENT BEFORE THE COMMITTEE. The General Committee of the Manawatu A. and P." Association had placed before it this afternoon several interesting sets of figures showing the financial side of the Association's Summer and Winter Shows. UP-TO-DATE BALANCE-SHEET. First came the balance-sheet for the year ended January 31 last, in which the energetic secretary (Mr J. C. Lane) brought the affairs of the Association right up-to-date. We reproduce the items in this balancesheet, omitting shillings and pence Liabilities.— To overdraft Bank of New Zealand, including unpresented cheques, £5615; sundry accounts, £21: Hunters' Challenge Cup fund, £16; library fund, £44; surplus brought forward January 31, 1908, £13,818; amount of credit of profit and loss account. £286; total, £14,_ 124. Assets. — By improvements and buildings at January 31, 1908, £8710; buildings for the current year, £431 (£9141); land account, £9739; show plant, less depreciation (10 per cent), £230; dairy sho\v plant less depreciation (10 per cent), £97; offices and hall furniture, less depreciation (5 per cent.), £155; medals and die, £80; education reserve, £30; cash in hand. £39; poultry pen account, £208; trophy account, £17; sundry accounts. £63; total, £19,803.

PROFIT AND LOSS. The second statement was an itemised profit and loss account for the past year. This showed that the Spring Show cost £2341 (including £1396 for prize awards and trophies, £331 for labour, and only £369 for the means of publicity, printing, advertising, and stationery). The total receipts for the same Show aggregated £2668 (including £1000 gate receipts, £770 fees for space, and £578 donations and trophies); in addition to which members' subscriptions amounted to £1169. The Dairy Show (winter) cost £982, the awards and judges' expenses amounting to £468 ; and the total receipts £1064 (including £767 for gates, stands, privileges, cheese and competitions). SOME. COMPARISONS. Not the least instructive and interesting of the matter placed before the Committee was a comparative statement, showing the receipts and expenditure under certain heads for "each year during the period 1905-9. We collect and tabulate some of the totals.
