THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. |>M PMSS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, December 29. At the Chess Championship Meeting this morning's session was devoted to the unfinished games in the second round. T Kelßing v. Davies (Ruy Lopea).--lhe end of the game was entered- upon with a knight bishop and pawns on each side, Kelling being a, pawn at the 65th move. The game is sail unfinished, and has been fuither aujourned, probably till Thursday night. Forsytib v. Barnes (King's gambit declined).— Forsyth lost an exchange in getting rid of a dangerous bishop. He lost an exchange again shortly afterwards, and resigned on the iHfrti. The third round resulted as follows: — Barnes v. Kelling (Caro Kaun defence).—On tbe 27th move Barnes took bis opponent's rook under the mistaken impression that be was giving a check, and thereby lost u;s queen. . ' In the game Davies v. Mason (Ruy Lopez), Mason's knight got into trouble on the 11th move, and his efforts to extricate it gave Daviee an opportunity of attacking strongly. Mason resigned on tbe 47th move, being unable to prevent pawn from queening. Dodcfe v. Fox (Guinoeo Piano).— Fox lost his knight by hasty play. By sacrificing a bishop later he won brilliantly on the 25th move. Edwards v. Forsyth (Zukertort's opening).— A very tough game, in which Edwards advanced bis king's side pawns, thereby keeping Forsyth's forces', especially bis bishops, inoperative. Forsyth later sucsumbed on tbe 15th move. Grierson had a bye. Dunedin, Dec. 30. Play in the fourth round of the Chess Congress began this morning. Fox, who played weakly, resigned to Davis o nthe thirty-second move. The two-knight defence was adopted.
